Dog lovers looking for a new best friend will be happy to learn there are dozens of dogs up for adoption in Darlington over the Christmas period.

Dogs Trust Darlington have plenty of rescue dogs looking for a forever home this month.

We have compiled a list of 12 pups hoping to bring some light into their new owner's lives.

Polly, German Shepherd cross

The Northern Echo:

This young girl is looking for the right home where she can get all the attention she needs - and would do best in a household without any young children or other pets, who can help her with socialisation.

This pup is looking for an active family who can help her with training sessions and build confidence.

Cookie, Bulldog cross

The Northern Echo:

A bulldog cross aged 1-2 years, Cookie is seeking a peaceful home with no children or other pets.

Described as "still acting like a puppy", this affectionate, playful dog will make for a delightful addition to an adult-only household prepared to keep her entertained and continue her training.

Bracken, Spaniel

The Northern Echo:

Bracken, a 4-year-old Spaniel, is a shy character who needs a supportive family to boost his confidence.

Severely affected by separation anxiety, he requires around-the-clock attention to help him establish and feel safe in his new living arrangements.

Walks in quieter areas due to his wariness of other pups will keep him physically active and happy.

Leo, Border Collie

The Northern Echo:

For those seeking an older companion, meet Leo—an 8-year-old Collie with medical needs.

Although he enjoys playtime, Leo’s favourite pastime is a doze on the couch next to his loved ones.

His ideal household would have someone at home throughout the day, with symbolic exercises of fetch providing him with a sprinkling of adventure.

Buzz, Bullmastiff Cross

The Northern Echo:

In the case of Buzz, a 4-year-old Bullmastiff Cross, his boundless energy and hefty size mean he needs room to run around.

While he's looking for an adult-only home where he can continue his training, Buzz also enjoys interacting with other dogs, given successful introductions are made at the centre.

Smurf, Border Collie

The Northern Echo:

The youngest of this friendly pack seeking adoption is Smurf.

At only 11 months old, this Collie cross is fit for a family that will continue her training and can handle showering her with affection.

Despite her hip dysplasia and luxating patella, she’s a gentle soul who loves to be the centre of attention.

Barney, Bulldog

The Northern Echo:

While Barney, a Bulldog between the ages 2 - 5 years, becomes a charming character once comfortable in your presence, he does have a cheeky side that keeps his family laughing.

His ideal home would be with patient and understanding adults, keeping in mind he may need training and medical care for his weight loss.

Dexter, German Shepherd

The Northern Echo:

For traditional breed lovers, there’s Dexter, a German Shepherd, who alongside daily companionship, needs training for his doggy social skills.

His perfectly matched household would include older teens used to larger breeds.

Silky and Tammy, German Shepherd

The Northern Echo:

Silky, a German Shepherd cross, a shy girl alongside her best pal Tammy, longs for quieter home with sensible older teens.

Having led a sheltered life, these girls are enjoying the home comforts in foster care until they find their forever homes.

Bow, Sharpei

The Northern Echo:

Finally, Bow, a 5-year-old Sharpei, is a sweetheart who wants a new home with secondary-school-age children who can be patient while she settles in.

Ozzy, Shih Tzu cross

The Northern Echo:

A sensitive canine looking for a quiet abode, Ozzy would be the perfect match for a household that prefers a quiet and calm lifestyle.

The centre recommends that he be adopted by owners without children, or pets.

This little lad would make a great addition to the right family who can match his playful nature and is just waiting for his forever home.

If you feel like you could be the perfect match for any of these hopeful hounds, consider extending your family and providing these dogs with the forever homes they so desperately need.
